Systems and their states
A system is something that is in one of several possible states at a given time, such as a clock, whose states are the possible hand positions. Systems have a certain lifetime, they are created and at some point dissolve (perish) again.
A state is a particular way a particular system can be at a given time, for example, the position of the hands of a clock (the “hand state”, the “hand position”).

Questions from participants *
- The definitions of "system" and "state" refer to each other. Aren't they circular definitions then?
- Yes, these terms are fundamental cannot be derived from other (more fundamental) terms. The “definitions” are therefore to be understood as implicit definitions.
